By Dudu Khumalo
Change can happen at any time. There are things that you cannot prepare for, that you cannot alter, change or prevent from happening and as much as I hate to admit it, discrimination on the grounds of tribe is one of those things.
We are now heading for 200 years with Ndebeles suffering since they have been on the run from Tshaka in 1820.
The latest is that the British government says Ndebeles cannot be tortured or killed by Mugabe even if you are an activist with a high profile.
This is the same government that turned a blin
d eye when Mugabe was butchering Ndebeles and her Majesty was busy dinning with the devil Mugabe.
The Ndebeles in Zimbabwe continue to encounter low-grade economic and political discrimination by the Shona majority. There is a diffuse sense that the needs of the Ndebele are ignored. In general, Matabeleland lags behind in development.
There is massive unemployment and general social destitution in the area. Furthermore, although there are no restrictions to high office, civil servants in Matabeleland are disproportionately Shona, and many do not even speak Ndebele. This contributes to the feeling of many Ndebeles that they are second-class citizens to the Shona and that their own culture is at risk.
I quote the recent court judgement “In general, a returnee from the United Kingdom to rural Matabeleland North or Matabeleland South is highly unlikely to face significant difficulty from ZANU-PF elements, including the security forces, even if the returnee is a MDC member or supporter”
What does this tell us about the judgment? It is safe to return a Ndebele than a Shona to Zimbabwe. The home office is playing a mind game with Zimbabweans. Ndebeles have long being frustrated by a lot of issues and they now they prefer to keep quite when they are being intimidated and by doing so, does not mean there is no violence in Matebeleland.
If a Shona in Masvingo is killed today by ZANU (PF) it becomes in the headlines and if a Ndebele is killed in Gwanda no one will know about it because we have been suffering for long. Why is the UKBA (UK Border Agency) not protecting Ndebeles as Zimbabweans? May be they never even bothered to reach Matebeleland when they went for their fact finding mission.
Did the courts know that if you are a Ndebele you can be beaten for not speaking Shona? Subsequently, Ndebeles in Zimbabwe have several grievances. Politically, they are seeking greater autonomy. Matabeleland is an opposition stronghold. Ndebele resistance has been peaceful. The UKBA must not divide us as Zimbabweans.

Ndebele Queen Lozikeyi Dlodlo
Above a portrait of queen lozikeyi in oxford University in London England
Inkosikazi Lozikeyi Dlodlo is a well known historical figure and heroine in this part of the world. She was King Lobhengula’s Indlovukazi (Great Queen) who later became the de facto regent of the Ndebele kingdom soon after King Lobhengula’s alleged disappearance and for the better part of Matabeleland’s early colonial history.
Oral and recorded history has it that Indlovukazi Lozikeyi Dlodlo played an unrivalled and heroic role in the Anglo-Matabele war of 1896. This war is also known as Imfazo or Impi Yehlok’elibomvu(The war of the Red Axe). She was both a leader and an inspirational figure to the warriors who fought hard to reclaim our fallen kingdom from the oppressive colonial system. In a few words she was the shining star of the great war of 1896!
Whilst Indlovukazi Lozikeyi Dlodlo’s heroine status is well known to some of us in Matabeleland she is virtually unknown to the rest of Zimbabwe.
By contrast, Mbuya Nehanda, another African heroine whose exploits had nothing to do with Matabeleland history seems to enjoy more newspaper, public and TV space in Matabeleland than our very own Indlovukazi Lozikeyi Dlodlo and I am not surprised why.
After all, during our school days history lessons had a lot about Mbuya Nehanda and nothing about Indlovukazi Lozikeyi Dlodlo. I hear that our children are also victims of the same academic propaganda!
Mbuya Nehanda does not only dominate our official history books, she has almost everything named after her. I am talking of important public landmarks like schools, streets and even aeroplanes. Her legacy is immortalised in everything and we are made believe that she was great-great-great-great woman who led her people like a messianic figure.Frankly speaking, the people who consider her a hero have done more than enough to create an everlasting memory of her alleged heroic deeds.
What have those whose history is intricately linked to Indlovukazi Lozikeyi Dlodlo’s great deeds done to immortalise her legacy? I am not going to say much beyond stating what I know has been done, what has not been done and what ought to be done to immortalise her heroine status.
Truly speaking, I only know of a primary school (Lozikeyi Primary School) and a rural area (KoNkosikazi) that was named after our said great queen. She is barely mentioned in official history books and neither do we see her images on national television.
Does this mean that the people who consider her as a heroine have failed to clearly and unapologetically project her said status to all those who care to know about the past? Does it mean that the people who consider her as a heroine do not have any control over what is shown and what is not shown on TV?
As an eternal resident of Bulawayo I find it even more absurd that there is no prominent building or street named after Indlovukazi Lozikeyi Dlodlo. To add more shame to an already shameful state of affairs, we have almost half the streets in the city centre named after people whose legacy has nothing to do with Matabeleland or better still, Bulawayo’s world famous status as the city of Kings and Queens .
A city of Kings
and Queens that does reserve its best symbol of honour to its best known queen can at best be described as a city of shame. Truly speaking, we can only cleanse this shame by renaming a pre-eminent landmark like Barbourfields Stadium to Indlovukazi Lozikeyi Dlodlo Stadium. I guess I am not asking for too much from city fathers who seem to be too reluctant to even rename one major street in the city centre after our said heroine.
Talking of historical wars and great battles, I must state that the way the Zulu nation and the South African government have kept the memory of the historic battle of Isandhlwana alive to this date makes me dark green with envy. For those who don’t know history, the battle of Isandhlwana is a time defying symbol of Zulu heroism and resistance to white colonialism. It is a living memory of Zulu prowess and resilience!
More importantly, it is one of the only two best known battles in pre-colonial history which saw pre-colonial African states militarily defeat to the better equipped British colonial forces. The only other battle is our very own battle of Pupu where a British colonial force led by Major Allan Wilson was virtually wiped out by Ndebele warriors.
The battle of Pupu ought to be a living memory of Ndebele prowess and resilience!
What is amazing, however, is that most people in this part of the world happen to more know much about Major Allan Wilson than they know about the victors of the battle in which he met his demise.
Mtshana Khumalo the man who commanded the victorious Ndebele force at that battle is a just a tiny footnote of all official accounts of our history.
Mthwakazi KaNdaba, the battle of Pupu may seem to be an event of the past but it is remains relevant to our present.
That battle was all about who we are and the heroes who fell at that battle died for the cause of liberty. We have a historic duty to commemorate it every year. The 4th of December should be a day to relive this significant portion of our great history as a nation.
The people of Matabeleland should stand up and be counted when it comes to honouring their heroes and heroines, and commemorating events of historical significance. The same obligation lies with the government of the day!
Look, I am not urging the government and the people of Matabeleland to erect giant statues of Indlovukazi Lozikeyi Dlodlo and build towers to her immortality across the land of her birth.
All I am saying is that she is a marginalized heroine who happened to be a predecessor of a now marginalised region populated by her marginalised descendants. Leaving her illustrious legacy in the periphery of memory is more than an insult to the great history of the Mthwakazi nation and that should never be allowed to happen.
By the same token I am not crying for a daily rendition of the battle of Pupu on Zimbabwe’s sole TV channel. All I am saying is that we are not doing enough to keep its memory alive.
Yes, the battle might have been fought a long time ago in a remote area of a now marginalized part of the world by the heroic predecessors of a now marginalized people, but that doesn’t mean we should not commemorate it.
The point here is that it is very important for us to know our true history, demand to be taught our true history and celebrate our true history. To deny ourselves or to be denied by others an opportunity to know and celebrate our own heroes, heroines and history is a denial of a birthright.
“Not to know what happened before you were born is to remain forever a child forever “,Cicero once said, and of course he was right. Unless the people of Matabeleland start taking their history, heroes and heroines seriously, they remain cry babies forever. We do not belong to the present, we belong to history and the present belongs to the future.

Can Zimbawe come up with a people driven Constitution?
Thirteen years have passed now, and Zimbabwe is still at this same position. No new constituition! The newspapers company shown below is no longer in business. So are many others. One thing still remains there, is still no progress on the country's most important document. One could have thought that the next elections will be held under the new constitution chosen by the people. To be honest nothing is promising so far. We will have to wait.
I found this in the archives of history

Be always ready to share the word
Be always ready to share the word in season and out of season.
Few days ago, a friend and work mate of mine who is devout Muslim started talking to me about God in the context of his religion. Not trying to be obvious, he began by putting it in generally terms. Need less to mention that the last time we had a talk about religion, he was slightly offended and we resolved not go that way, seeing work laws forbids such issues.
I noticed that as we was talking he boosted of being the best in his religion (Muslim) and belittled Christianity and Jesus. He would go on and mock the idea of salvation and not to mention quoting the scriptures out of context just to qualify his ideas. He boasted of having gone through the bible and Koran several times. In his theory he put Abraham, Jesus, Mohammad, Moses and Elijah in the same category of great prophets. He said as Muslims they respect Jesus and Mary but to say that Jesus is God is mockery. He denounced the virgin birth, denounced the Trinity, spoke high of the old testament but denied the new testament. He did this for about fifteen minutes while I waited for him patiently to finish
After he was done I respectfully asked him test a question, I said "So what do you think is the right religion in your opinion? He said that is not a fair question. I said you seem to be going around researching and digging the truths, so tell me straight up which religion is best. This question however warmed him up and he continued confidently but he could not answer me directly even though he continued misquoting some Bible verses again and again. In all this I am listening to my spirit.
He finally gave me a chance to speak. I said to him If you want to know more about what I believe or what my religion is, please go and read in the scriptures about what Jesus claimed to be, and what people said he is since you read the Bible so much! I said if you do that you will know exactly what my faith, religion and belief is. He said to me bluntly, "Jesus never claimed to be anything" I said OK I have seen that you quote the Bible out of context. I said Jesus said "I and my father are one" he said "I am the way the truth and the life, no man comes to the father but by me"
I said John 3-16 says For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that whosoever believes in him will not perish but have eternally life. Roma 10-17 Faith comes by hearing and hearing the word of God. I quoted Eph 2 v 8-9. For by grace ye have been saved through faith and that not of your selves lest any man should boost. Roman 3v23-25 For all have sinned , and came short of the glory of God, (24)being justified by faith freely through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus. (25) Whom God sent forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, throughout the forbearance of God.
I further broke it down to that salvation is a free gift which cannot be earned or deserved. All one need to do is accept Jesus in their heart. I told him that without accepting Jesus human kind is lost. Jesus is the saviour. For the first time the second ranking person in the greater Indianapolis had nothing to say.

EU Gukurahundi remarks angers residents
The Bulawayo-based and state-run Sunday News claimed that Ambassador Aldo Dell'Ariccia suggested during meetings in Matebeleland that the 1980s Gukurahundi atrocities were an “old song” that should not be allowed to undermine development in the region.
The newspaper quoted Dell'Ariccia as allegedly saying “Gukurahundi has become so much of a tired song in Matabeleland”.
Blasted one activist in an email to the Ambassador: “How dare you insult us? You owe us a very big apology. We lost our relatives during Gukurahundi; that’s an old song? Kids don’t have birth certificates; that's an old song?" But in a statement to NewZimbabwe.com Tuesday Ambassador Dell'Ariccia denied making the remarks and accused the Sunday News of fabricating quotations attributed to him.
“None of the quotes reported as my alleged declarations to the Sunday News' article are accurate,” he said.
“I presume that the dissemination of false declarations obeys to a strategy of defamation of the European Union and tries to create animosity between us and the people of Matabeleland. And in an interview with VOA’s Violet Gonda, Dell'Ariccia added: "I have never ever in my life used those words. On top of it it’s not even in my vocabulary. “What I did say is that the people of Matabeleland have an installed capacity in terms of manpower and again with confidence look at the future and their contributions in the overall development of the region." |

Aldo Dell'Ariccia,
How dare you insult us ? What are you giving to the people of Matebeleland ?
Mugabe has never apologized for what he did.
You owe us a very big apology. We lost our relatives during Gukurahundi .Thats an old song.
Kids dont have birth certificates. That's an old song.
You owe us an apology. You could have said it in a more diplomatic way.
Why are you NOT opening office in Bulawayo if you have such teremity of saying such infalamatory statements.

Dear Mr Ndlovu,
I presume that you refer to an article published on-line in the "New Zimbabwe".
I would like to reassure you of the fact that NONE of the quotes reported in the article are true.
I profoundly regret that "New Zimbabwe" has taken up alleged declarations that I would have made to the Bulawayo-based Sunday News, without taking the precaution of consulting me, and that he has taken these false declarations as true and factual.
What happened during the visit of the whole Delegation to Bulawayo is exactly the contrary, because we had the opportunity of having a first-hand impression on how present and painful the memory of Gukurahundi is in the mind and spirit of the people of Matabeleland.
I presume that the source that disseminated the false declarations obeys to a strategy of defamation of the European Union and tries to create animosity between us and the people of Matabeleland.
I hope that this clarification puts the record straight and I would be grateful if you could communicate to other of your compatriots that might have been shocked by the article, the truth of the facts.
Best regards
Aldo Dell'Ariccia

Mthwakazi leader pleads for Unity of purpose!
I plead with all of us to make every effort to maintain a mindset that leads us to UNITY this year and for years to come. I plead that we venture into projects and agendas that will unite the people of Mthwakazi. I plead that we evaluate every initiative that we engage in this year to see if it is uniting or creating dis-unity amongst our people. If we are honest with ourselves, in this self-evaluation process, we will know if what we have engaged ourselves is for or against Mthwakazi. We have everything to gain than to lose if we choose this direction. We have lost so many opportunities because of this one factor. What have we got to lose by our willingness to give up just one or two things in order for Mthwakazi to become one force? Is it a name, a post, an office, reputation, popularity, money, business venture, following, credit or praise that we are not willing to give up at the expense of unity? Must we hold on to that one thing at the expense of the development of Mthwakazi? If we honestly evaluate ourselves, we will find that so much would have been accomplished by now had we understood this fact and had we made a commitment to this fact. One may ask, “What have we accomplished by choosing to go our own way?” We have accomplished some things alright. However in the scheme of things, is it possible that more could have been accomplished by now if we knew how to rally behind one another. We have everything to lose if we do not embrace this truth. We have future generations to blame us if we do not make this our Modus Operandi in 2012. Mthwakazi must have a mindset change. We can no longer afford to be the laughing stock of our communities. We can no longer afford to be viewed as a people who do not know how to get their act together. A united people can never be defeated. If we accept that defeat should be the status quo in our midst, then I encourage that we continue to operate as we have. However, if we are tired of being a defeated and powerless people, then let us be willing to give up some in order to win many. We will discover that we will give up so little in relative terms compared to what we will gain in the long run. Let us not live in the now, but remember that actions of today will generate consequences that we will pay for generations to come. A progressive people are those that engage in projects that are long-term in nature.
I pledge to do the best I can to foster unity within my area of influence. We all have our sphere of influence and it does not matter how small. I kindly ask that we join hands in this effort. Unless we understand the power of unity as a people, our individual efforts will not get us anyway. Unless we learn to engage in a process of self-evaluation in true honesty in determining if our efforts are for personal gratification or for the benefit of the masses, then we are deceiving ourselves when we proclaim the former and yet our objectives clearly spell out the latter. We must clearly understand that the people of Mthwakazi are not stupid. Whether we are talking about uGogo out there eTsholotsho or uKhulu eLupane, to the young person in our living rooms that we do not give a chance to speak out, they can see if our efforts are for the benefit of the masses. There are some in our midst who also think they are the best that God ever created on this planet and only their efforts will take us to the Promised Land. I will tell you there is no one person that has an answer to our liberty and freedom We each have a piece of the puzzle, and unless we understand the process of putting the jigsaw puzzle together, we will never, I repeat NEVER see the land that we speak and dream of. Let us face reality bakithi. We will not always get along. We will face differences. We will fight and disagree in some cases on petty issues, and in others on significant ones. Unless we learn the art of getting over those differences and focusing on the main cause, we will remain victims in all capacities. Let us learn to stop licking our wounds and playing pity parties. We must remember that whilst we continue to lick our wounds, Mthwakazi continues to procreate and we will lose yet another generation. Must Mthwakazi stop procreating? How many generations do we want to lose before we wake up? Let us also learn to acknowledge when we are wrong and have wronged others. It is a sad thing that we have been victims of our oppressors and yet we remain victims due to our inability to work together for the common cause that we speak so loudly and passionately about. We are our own critics and oppressors in many respects. This I believe is the biggest challenge we must learn to overcome. 2012 is the year I declare Mthwakazi will make strides to overcome this challenge. 2012 is the year Mthwakazi will make a conscious decision to look within and see what power Mthwakazi has within its walls.
Let us learn to recognize and appreciate those who are doing something. Let us not be so quick to find fault. We must change our mindset. Why are we so quick to identify the negative and NEVER the positive? Whilst we are maintaining this mind set, we must be willing to accept constructive criticism as well. Arrogance is the chief destroyer of any individual. Thinking we know it all, is a serious delusion. No one person knows it all. When we are criticized, we must be willing to learn from it and move on as a better and improved people. There are also those who like to criticize for the sake of doing so without any substance. For those, we say, please do all of us a favor and SHUT UP. The noise you make has created enough damage and please get out of the way of those who are trying to do something and I repeat, PLEASE SHUT UP AND GET OUT OF THE WAY. Whilst we are entertaining your unfounded criticism, one more child is going without education, one more young person is losing an opportunity to start a business, one more business is shutting down in our beloved City, one more seat in our Council chambers is being snatched by the oppressor, one more job is being lost to the outsiders in our region, one more young lady is being captured through the disguise of marriage, our language is being suppressed either in the media, or in the schools where less and less qualified Ndebele teachers are being allowed to teach our children, the revenues generated from our City are being used to develop the rest of the Country, whilst our City is sitting in ruins, whilst our industrial sites has become a ghost town. . I can go on and on. If you have the answer, why don’t you show us and lead the way instead of criticizing those who are trying to do something. Again I repeat if you do not have anything to show for what you have done to take us closer to our freedom, PLEASE DO US A FAVOR AND SHUT UP.
I kindly appeal to those of us (me included) in the Diaspora. Whilst we are enjoying the comforts of the western world, whilst we are taking our children to the best schools, whilst we have access to the best medical care, let us not forget the children of Mthwakazi, who are still in our beloved country and neighboring countries who are just as deserving of the same opportunities granted to us. I am not overlooking the fact that not all in the Diaspora are leading comfortable lives. Please understand me. We can all tell stories about the struggles we have experienced at one time or another. Now that this is clarified, let us not forget that every single year several hundreds of our school children are graduating from our ill-equipped High Schools (which do not have the funding to teach Math and Science subjects nor the qualified teachers required) and cannot gain admission to the only University that was built for them. What sort of motivation does a child like that have when they know their future is doomed before they even start school? How do you stay motivated in an environment like that? What about medical care? My God just the thought of our people not having access to medical care, should give up sleepless nights. Can we just wake up to this reality and ask ourselves the question, “Did God grant us the opportunity only for us to concern ourselves about our immediate families or is It possible He allowed us the opportunity so we can as the Joseph in the Bible do something to save the masses?” This is food for thought as we ponder on UNITY. Yes I do understand that there are those who say unless our political plight is resolved, our efforts are futile. To ensure that I understand clearly, are you saying that unless we are able to gain our political freedom, we should allow that one child’s future to be doomed? We should allow a whole generation to miss out on opportunities because we chose to do nothing until our political freedom is achieved? You mean to tell me that within the current environment and with its limitations, there is no way we can help one school, one hospital, one business? You must be kidding me. Are we so lacking in creativity that we have allowed ourselves to be paralyzed whilst we have people on the ground who have found ways to get these things done and all they need is the support from those of us in the Diaspora? Let us please work together.
The factions that continue in our midst are only causing us to be a laughing stock to the rest of the world. Let us look at ourselves in the mirror and honestly weigh our efforts to see if they are leading us to unity or further dissention. We do understand there are those who could care less if their efforts are leading to this level of separation. They have resolved within themselves their agenda is for them alone and yet outwardly state it is for all. In due course we shall find them out. My appeal is to those who may not be aware that their actions have and are leading us to further destruction. I appeal to you, to please help us in this effort. Other nations have found ways to work together, and what stops Mthwakazi from doing so? We have become our own enemies. We cannot even trust each other, and until when will we continue to accept such an anomaly? Who ever allowed themselves to believe the lie that Mthwakazi people cannot be trusted? Why have we allowed ourselves to fall for such deception? We are the most conservative people, the most dependable, the most loyal, the most unwavering, the most consistent, and yet we have allowed ourselves to believe the lie. My goodness gracious, when are we going to wake up and see how we have fallen into the trap of the oppressors? When are we going to see ourselves for who we are? Do we need someone else to tell us who we are? Is that not foolish thinking if we are honest with ourselves? Besides God Himself, no one can know me as much as I know myself. So why would I believe a lie from someone else about who they want me to be? No one can change who I am or who you are unless you or I let them. No one can change your value system unless you let them change it. Just think about it. It is sad that even those that have received the opportunity to escape from the atrocious treatment of the oppressor continue to behave as though they are still bound. It is like the eagle that grew with chickens and continued to think it was a chicken. When given the chance to fly, the eagle continued to see itself as a chicken. It is time to fly eagles. It is time to flex your wings. It is time to explore the unchartered territories. YES WE ARE EAGLES AND WE ARE GOING FLY.
In our effort to seek for unity, we shall deal very kindly with those who are making an effort to ensure we become a unified force. This is submitted on the behalf of the silent majority.
Mthwakazi must unite in 2012. That must be our goal. Nothing will stop us if we can achieve this goal. I mean absolutely nothing.
Mamkwa!

Mixed feeling as Highlanders elects new leaders
Following a rather tumultuous tenure by Themba Ndlela, Peter Dube stepped up
and got the confidence of the voters in an election held at the Highlanders Club
House. The Highlanders Football Club elections followed the Annual General
Meeting at the same venue a week ago.
Peter Dube beat the incumbent by 184 votes to 143 while Mandla Moyo amassed
23 votes. The outgoing Chairman, Ndlela pledged to support the newly elected
Dube and his committee.
Ndlela had taken a debt ridden Highlanders FC that faced legal actions over
unpaid bills and wages and the Club property attached by the Deputy Sheriff.
Andrew Tapela beat Emmett Ndlovu and Donald Ndebele to retain his Secretary
General portfolio. Tapela received 153 votes to Ndlovu 147 and 55 for
Ndebele.
The committee member position went to Charles Moyo with 130 votes while
Wisdom Mabhena got 122 compared to D Mabhena who managed 99.
The new beginning for the oldest football club benefited from the balanced
committee as Dube will have to work with those with inside information. This is
expected to provide smooth hand-over and take over.
“I do not have much to say. In my leadership, we will strive to embrace everyone. No one is going to be left out,” said an elated Dube.
What the fans and wellwishers said soon after the results!

Highlanders have a very efficient voting system and the people on the ground have spoken and all true Bosso people have to unite and support their choices and the system!!!!

Congratulations to Highlanders for holding an orderly election. It speaks volumes about the civility of the cultural values of the people of Mthwakazi. There were no losers or winners. A big thank you to Temba Ndlela and his outgoing executive for a job well done. I am confident that there will be a smooth transition to the new executive and we wish them well in their future endeavours. Congratula...tions to Peter Dube. I read the Chairman's report and was impressed. The foundation for the future success of Highlanders has been laid. Phambili lamazinyane esilo!! Mthwakazi ondlela zimhlophe. It is important to recognise that the previous executive members have an important role to play in the future of Highlanders. Let us desist from the culture of hate politics and learn to appreciate the efforts of people who sacrifice their valuable time for the success of Highlanders.
